Yes, Santa is coming to town, and in less than one month. We’d all better get scurrying.

One thing I like to do, well, besides collecting everyone’s virtual wish lists, is to try to think of something unusual. A gift that’s really unique. I love searching on the Internet and often run across some pretty good deals. And when I do, I pass them on.

Well, you know what domain names are, right? They’re website addresses like www.KCperks.com or www.creative-assistant.com. There are millions and millions of online websites using these domain names. And there are also millions of domain names that have been purchased, yet not hosted anywhere. People “own” the domain name but are not using it. They may have future plans for the name(s), but wanted to purchase before anyone else did. That’s because once you own the name, you’ve got “dibs” on it and will be offered the renewal opportunity first, before anyone else can grab it away from you and claim it for themselves.

I’ve purchased quite a few domain names in the past month and saw that prices, like everything else, are going up. So, it was nice to get word that I can pick up some domain names for a really good savings. But, there’s a catch. It must be done by midnight on Black Friday. But that’s fine with me since I do most of my Black Friday shopping online anyways.

So, I’m thinking about doing something different this year. Maybe grab the family name as a domain name and start using it to share photos with everyone. We’re scattered across the country, so we could all share the site and post, not only our photos, but upcoming events, family news, videos, maybe even do a little ancestry searching that everyone could pitch in and add to.

If you’re thinking of doing something different for the “person who has everything”, why not give them a gift of technology where the opportunities are endless. Here’s the link to the offer, but it’s only good until midnight on Black Friday.

Although it says “today only”, I have their word that they’re extending it until the end of the day on Friday.

I’m thinking of grabbing my grandkids names. They may not use them right away, but they will be “ours” when the time comes. It’s better to purchase (and claim ownership) to the names you want now, before the ones you want are taken.

Well, Happy Thanksgiving to all. Don’t eat too much turkey! You need your rest for all the After-Thanksgiving shopping. Will you be hitting the crowds? Or staying in the comfort of your home and doing your shopping like me.

Just click here to grab your $9.99 domain name(s) for something a little different this year…

CNN Daily Top 10 - DO NOT OPEN http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2008/08/05/cnn-daily-top-10-do-not-open/ http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2008/08/05/cnn-daily-top-10-do-not-open/#comments Tue, 05 Aug 2008 23:46:30 +0000 KC Computer Tips & Web 2.0 http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2008/08/05/cnn-daily-top-10-do-not-open/ I checked my email early this morning as I usually do, and found an email that said it was from “Daily Top 10″, and the subject line said “CNN.com Daily Top 10″.

That’s odd I thought. Although I do visit CNN.com frequently, I didn’t remember signing up for anything to be sent to me. Being the suspicious person I am, I toggled my mouse on the link in the body of the copy. I noticed that down in the lower left corner of my window (where I can see where the link will take me), it had a strange email address ending in “.de” which is Germany. Huh?

Well, something just didn’t seem right, so of course I didn’t click. I immediately went to my top menu bar in Outlook Express, chose “messages” and then “block sender”. As it blocked this sender, it gave a foreign email address, definitely not CNN. Later in the day when I checked my email again, I found more emails with “CNN.com Daily Top 10″ in the subject line. Again blocked. Again, even more foreign email addresses.

Being the investigator I am, I googled “CNN.com Daily Top 10″ and found that, yes, it’s true, this is definitely a major spam incident… AND, it just came out yesterday, August 4th. It links you to a site hosting Malware. To read more, check out today’s featured article on Wordpress.com:
http://wordpress.com/tag/cnn-daily-top-10/ be sure to read the comments, some people are already hit with this Malware attack. Topix.com (a news website) also has an article about it.

Whatever you do, do not open these files and click on their links. In fact, never click on a link if you don’t trust the site it’s coming from. In this case it LOOKS like a trusted site because they’re masqueraded as a major news source. It you’re in doubt, always toggle your mouse over a link WITHOUT CLICKING and you should be able to see the web address you’ll be taken to at the bottom of your screen.

Block all emails that come into your inbox with this message and KEEP BLOCKING them. You may wonder why you’ve blocked the email, but still keep receiving them? That’s because they use different email addresses each time to send them to you. So, you’ll have to keep blocking them until this culprit is caught and stops sending them.

Please send this to everyone you know.

Internet Security When Away From Home http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2008/07/29/internet-security-when-away-from-home/ http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2008/07/29/internet-security-when-away-from-home/#comments Tue, 29 Jul 2008 19:53:40 +0000 KC Working at Home Computer Tips & Web 2.0 http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2008/07/29/internet-security-when-away-from-home/ MY LAPTOP WAS STOLEN! OH NO! How devastating!

No, this story isn’t about me, but it’s about one of the people who inspire me. Mark Widawer is someone who provides me with lots of Internet Marketing strategies. A very smart man, who recently had to share a very personal story with his readers.

While vacationing abroad, as he slept in his hotel room, someone crept in and stole his laptop. Now aside from being very creepy… having someone in your room while you slept… can you imagine the rage of knowing someone has your personal information?

Well, Mark, being the great teacher he is, has recently shared some good tips that I’d like to pass along. By understanding security issues a little better, and taking a few precautionary steps, we may be able to prevent ourselves from ever having to say… “MY LAPTOP WAS STOLEN”.

I think the best tip Mark shares is LEAVE YOUR LAPTOP HOME. WHAT$#@%&*@!???

Now don’t get all lathered up. In a minute, I’ll give you an easy solution to still be able to access and update your data. But first, let’s understand a little about how you get online with your laptop when you travel. Wireless (Wi-Fi) hot spots, like those found at Starbucks and bookstores everywhere, are one way to ’surf’ when you’re not at home. They’re set up so that ‘guests’ can easily get online. That’s a good thing, right? NO… Easy access typically means that there’s no security put in place such as encrypting of your valuable information. Also, keep in mind that most wireless LANs allow peer-to-peer connections. See that guy a few tables down from you? He could be inconspicuously connecting to your laptop and eavesdropping in on YOUR airwaves. Or worse, maybe he’s going to follow you along as you enter one of your password-protected log-ins, or some credit card information. Once he’s hooked into your computer, you’ll be revealing contents of your emails, instant messages and the IP addresses you’re connecting to.

Instead, why not look into “Go To My PC” and leave your laptop at home? Besides not having to carry (and protect) your PC on your next trip, you can just go to any business center in any hotel, Internet cafe, or airport lounge and log into your computer back home or at your office. It’s very secure, because you’re working on files located at a remote location. How would you like to be able to:

Work on your office PC from home — in real time
Travel anywhere and use your PC remotely
Increase your work flexibility and productivity
Access your files, programs, email and network

Learn more by visiting the link below. You can also give it a 30-day trial for FREE! This may be just the ticket for your next excursion … with easy, secure access to your PC from any browser.

GoToMyPC - Access Your PC from Anywhere

After you’ve had a chance to check out “Go To My PC”, head on over to Mark’s site for more great tips on “laptop security”. You’ll be glad you did.

How to send mass email to multiple contacts http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2008/01/29/how-to-send-mass-email-to-multiple-contacts/ http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2008/01/29/how-to-send-mass-email-to-multiple-contacts/#comments Wed, 30 Jan 2008 02:37:12 +0000 KC Making Money Online Working at Home Computer Tips & Web 2.0 Advertising & Marketing http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2008/01/29/how-to-send-mass-email-to-multiple-contacts/ Okay, the time has come. I have to explain something that… for me… is so important to running a business. It’s about email. Yes, it’s been around for a while. Yes, we all know a few different tricks. But I get a lot of questions about email from visitors to my site. One question that pops up a lot is: “How do I send an email to a whole list of customers all at once?”

Well, there are many “simple” answers… but also some “good” answers that may not be so obvious. You see, one way that you CAN do this (and most people do), is to click on a whole bunch of names from their address book, and insert them into the “To” field of the message they’re sending. Well, that’s fine. And, that also works. But each person will “see” everyone else’s email addresses.

So, sure… you can put all those addresses in the “BCC” (blind carbon copy) field so that no one can see them. Not so fast! Did you know if you have too many addresses in a BCC field, your ISP (Internet Service Provider) or the ISP’s that you’re sending out to, may shut you right down and “black list” you. This is how spammers operate, and ISP’s have gotten wise to it, so they’ve started blocking those types of emails. That means your email might not reach “any” of the addresses you’ve sent it to.

Another idea would be to make a “group” and put all the people you want to email to, into this group. For instance, I could have a group named “KC’s Contacts” and put 20 email addresses in that group. When I want to send or forward my message to those 20 contacts, I just put my “group” name in the “To” field. This is nice because it “hides” everyone’s email addresses, so that as the email gets passed along, my contacts’ addresses aren’t out there for everyone to see. Especially “spammers”!! But isn’t this a little cumbersome? For instance, what if today I only want to send to 15 of those 20 addresses? Make another group? And later another? No, too much effort.

So let’s say, for example, that you want to send one email to about 50 different clients (or more). Yet, you don’t want each person to see that it was ALSO sent to others? This may be the case if you’re sending out an email newsletter for your business. Wouldn’t you want each customer to think that YOU were specifically talking to THEM? It’s much more professional this way and gets a higher response.

Enter “Email Marketing”. We all get those emails. They’re from big companies and organizations that we’ve signed up with to receive notifications of their special promotions, newsletters, contests, etc. Ever notice that many of them are addressed to YOU in particular? Doesn’t it make you feel like more of a V.I.P. or “special” customer, when you receive a personal email like this?

If you own or run a business, you should know that staying in constant contact with your customers is of the utmost importance. And these days, one of the cheapest, fastest, efficient ways is thru the Internet and email. Why not get the jump on your competition by using an email marketing service, similar to the one shown below? Whether you use it once a week, or once a month, it repeatedly keeps your name in front of them and lets them know that you want their business. And talk about easy? Their step-by-step email wizard, with over 200 customizable templates will give you the ability to send out personalized emails to your whole address book, in a snap. You’ll have support and the assurance knowing that you’re using an approved “bulk mailer” service that will keep you in compliance with the current laws.

The link above will take you to their free 60-day trial… that’s right… FREE! You don’t even have to provide a credit card up front to get started. How confident is that? Just load your addresses in and start creating your correspondence immediately. Check out Constant Contact today and let me know what you think!

Oh, by the way. Happy New Year everyone. I’ve been away for a bit, doing some video experimentation. I’ll be sharing lots of video “how-to”, right here in my blog, in the coming months.

Black Friday Wii http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2007/11/23/black-friday-wii/ http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2007/11/23/black-friday-wii/#comments Fri, 23 Nov 2007 19:24:04 +0000 KC Everyday Pointers http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2007/11/23/black-friday-wii/ Well, the biggest sales day of the year is in full swing as I’m writing this. I don’t know about you, but I got up with the crazy shoppers and headed out at 4:15 this morning.

Although I saw an ad for the Nintendo Wii at Walmart, and they opened at 5 a.m., I didn’t think I’d have much of a chance to find one. So I opted for the Target store that opened at 6 a.m. They had deals on some other goodies I wanted.

My family said “Don’t go out and stand in the cold and freeze, it’s not worth it”. But to me, it wasn’t about the money I might save. It’s just that Black Friday is the kick-off of the holiday season (at least in my family) and it’s always been tradition to go ‘together’. You know, kind of a family thing. There’s just something about the excitement of it all.

So I arrived at my local Target store (1-1/2 hours before their opening time…yawn), there were already about 75 people there. Some in chairs, some with blankets wrapped around them. I found my way to the end of the line and made friends with the people around me. It was verrrrrry cold… the kind of cold that makes your nose turn red and stick together. Snowflakes were falling all around, and the ground became covered, but it added some Christmas ambiance to the festivities.

After a lot of jumping jacks (to stay warm) and conversations (to pass the time), the doors finally opened. In the back of my mind, I’m always worried about how rowdy the crowd will get and if there will be a lot of pushing and shoving (some people take this WAY to far). But the crowd stayed in line and moved into the store in an orderly manner. There were a few police officers there to block the people trying to cut in line (nice policeman). Yes, on the outside of the store, there was congeniality and calm.

But that’s where it ended. Although the first thing I noticed inside was the warmth, there was suddenly an urgency and A MISSION. Carts started being grabbed and running people over, items were flying off shelves and people started running to the … um … the … oh yeah … the ELECTRONIC’S DEPARTMENT. (What’s Christmas without technology, eh?)

Luckily I had my two girls with me. Now that’s the way to do it. I had held ‘our’ spot in line in the cold so that they could stay warm in the car until the store opened. They came and jumped in line with me as the crowd started to move indoors. (No, that’s okay Officer… they’re with me… grin?) We all took a few items off the list and made a bee line for the departments we wanted. I gave them the list for the Electronic’s Department where the mob was swiftly moving to, and I took the slower-paced Houseware’s Department (my Momma didn’t raise no dummies). As we parted, everyone’s swift gait suddenly became an all-out race, so I did what every good Mom would do. I stood back and yelled “RUN GIRLS RUN”.

Well, the rest seems like a blur, but thankfully we ended up with everything on our lists (except the Nintendo Wii… oh darn). But, we can put another notch in our Black Friday belts and store away the memories ’til next year.

Now… at home… it’s time to hit the Cyber Black Friday sales. I’m surfing for more ideas and know that lots of you folks will soon be too. Don’t forget to check out my site for special links to deals and sales that are only available for a limited time.

50K Anyone? http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2007/11/09/50k-anyone/ http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2007/11/09/50k-anyone/#comments Fri, 09 Nov 2007 16:33:44 +0000 KC Kalie the Cat Everyday Pointers http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2007/11/09/50k-anyone/ Well, hello everyone. It’s Kalie the cat, with “Cat-Blogging Fridays”. I know, I know, I’ve been a slacker with my blogs lately. Since we changed the clocks back though, I just haven’t been myself. I seem to be extremely busy with my cat-naps. But I haven’t forgotten you. In fact, I’ve got quite a few FUN things today for you. I know the ‘puter lady sends you stuff about ‘puter jargon and Internet babble, so I’m back to lighten things up a little.

Now, is anyone interested in receiving $50,000 dollars? Ah-ha… I thought that would get your attention. I’ll get to that in a minute.

First of all, here’s a FUN page you can visit when you get a few free minutes of play time. You’ve all heard of the popular FOX TV show, The Simpson’s… right? Well, if you want to see what YOU would look like as a Simpson (and who wouldn’t?), just go to www.Simpsonizeme.com and upload your picture. It’s really cool. Here’s one I did of the ‘puter lady:

'Puter Lady

Nice!?! Okay, moving right along, let’s look at some “cool tools”. Have you ever wanted to monitor a developing news story, keep tabs on your favorite cat food, get the latest on a celebrity or event, or keep current on a competitor or industry? Well, here’s a whisker-licking’ good way to do it. Just to to Google Alerts and enter your search words and email address. You’ll receive email notices for the latest web updates, based on your specifics. I’ve currently got an alert running with the search query… “tuna-scented air fresheners”. Yum.

Okay, now, let’s say you’ve got a product and you want to make a website to talk about it. If your product is something that people “want”, then you’ll probably have lots of people checking it out. But what if it’s just an everyday product that people “need”? Well, if that’s the case, you have to make your site F-U-N and give away FREE stuff, and ask people to sign up, so that your product will frequently stay in front of them. Here’s one of my favorite sites because each month, they have some new type of useful tool, that you can use around the house. It’s Scott Towels. Everybody needs paper towels… right? But Scott gives you a good reason come back again and again. Check out some of their fun printables and interactive Web 2.0 tools:
Print a Honey-Do List
Make your own Certificates
Dishwasher Reminder
Emergency Checklists
How many calories have I burned?
Scrapbooking Stickers
Turn Family Chore Days into F-U-N
$1.00 Off Printable Coupon

Oh, and that $50,000 dollars that I spoke of earlier. Here’s where you can take a chance on winning it… Holiday Cash Sweepstakes

GOOD LUCK! And remember… Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Don’t forget to be thankful for your furry, four-legged friends. We’re thankful for you!

Making a List http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2007/11/05/making-a-list/ http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2007/11/05/making-a-list/#comments Tue, 06 Nov 2007 01:43:48 +0000 KC Computer Tips & Web 2.0 Everyday Pointers http://creative-assistant.com/blog/2007/11/05/making-a-list/ Can you believe it’s November already? This year the stores started putting out their Christmas items BEFORE Halloween! Wow, it seems to come earlier and earlier each year. Soon, there will be visions of sugar plums dancing … partridges in pear trees … hidden pickles (hidden pickles?) … Christmas cookies and more. I can smell the Christmas scents already.

Well, of course Christmas means presents, and presents mean shopping and visits with Santa. Today you can do most of your shopping from the comfort of your own home. But start early. You’ve got to allow time for shipping, and out-of-stock items.

I just pulled a stat on Internet Users today and it’s in the billions… 1,244,449,601 to be exact. With all those people online, there will be a gazillion (??) dollars worth of sales made online this holiday season. Are you ready to fight the virtual crowds.

I don’t know about you, but I like to find gifts that are unusual and out-of-the-ordinary. You know … something a little different. Well, with all the research I do for my computer and Internet articles, I run into really cool stuff all year long. So, this year, I’ve decided to design a Marketplace where I can share links to these sites and provide my readers with the seasonal promotions I’ve found.

So, starting today, each article I send to you will contain a link to TODAY’S FEATURED ITEM in KC’s Marketplace. Hope you’ll check it out each day and by all means, share with the other shoppers in your life.

I’ve got some cool, new Internet tips and tricks coming your way in a day or two. Stay tuned! Be sure to keep an eye on the Marketplace as it will be changing daily, right up until the holidays.
